THE RESOLUTE YOUTH BY VEN. EMEKA ONWUAKPA

The Youth face multiple challenges as they pass through this phase of life.  The word “Resolute” is someone having or showing great determination.  It is very closely related with the word “determined”.  The Resolute Youth represents one who has made up his or her mind on a particular issue or who is determined on a line of action.  This is related to positively being on the path of righteousness.  So, he or she is one who is determined to live righteously. It is to be devoted to a principle and be committed to a course of action.

A typical example is a resolute youth in the Bible is Daniel.  Daniel 1:8 states “But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the Chief official for permission not to defile himself this way”  Daniel with his three Hebrew colleagues, Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego had been captured by the led by the Babylonians Nebuchadnezzar in 605BC and exiled to Babylon from Judah.  Daniel feeling strongly that the food had been offered to the Babylonian gods or that it contained pork, which the Jewish law prohibited, declined to eat it.  That was no mean resolve in a foreign land.  He faced execution of it was discovered by the King that he had declined in taking the King’s food and meat.  That notwithstanding, he was resolved to obey God.  How then can the youth of these days be resolute.

  1. Know God: For the youth to be resolute, the knowledge of God is absolute. This knowledge will propel the youth to know what God demands from them.  Dan 11:32b” but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.  This knowledge is hinged on having Christ as one’s personal Saviour and Lord.  It is easier for the youth to be resolute when he or she knows the Lord and operates along His will.  Daniel and co were resolute because of their knowledge of God which prohibited them from ungodly acts.  When the youth knows God, it will be easier to resolve to obey God and live righteously.
  2. Non – conformity to the World: Another way of being the resolute youth is not to conform to the world.  Roms 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed buy the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God”.  The world has its pattern and behaviour.  Wherever there conflicts with the word of God, they are not to be followed.  The resolute youth must be determined not to follow the worldly youth in their behaviour.  This encompasses life style and application of worldly principles in their manner of behaviour.

  1. Heavenly Focus: Whenever someone knows where he or she is going, it is difficult for such a person to derail. In Acts 26:19, Paul said “I was not disobedient to the heavenly focused. He was resolute in his works to the Lord.  In Acts 20:23-24, Paul affirmed” I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.  However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace”.  When the youth is determined to make heaven, he or she will be resolute to live righteously.  They now know that even though they are in this world, they have a better home in heaven, to which they are committed to.  They know that one day they will leave this world, so their focus is heaven.  Paul due to his heavenly focus, was resolute to live righteously and do the work of God.  So shall the resolute be.

Whenever the youth know God, refuse to conform to worldly standard and become heavenly focused, he or she will be resolute to live righteously and obey God.  Let our youths be encouraged to follow that pattern of life, for that is the BEST WAY.
